(CAIRO) At least 50 Kilograms of gold were stolen from the Egyptian Mint Authority, Youm7 reported Thursday.
The recent stocktaking process revealed that 15 bullions, each of 2 Kilograms, 23 gold plates weighing 22 Kilograms alongside a number of commemorative medals made especially to mark the New Suez Canal inauguration were stolen from the mint house, anonymous source told Youm7 Thursday.
The incident took place during a four-day leave of the authority’s senior storekeeper, the source said, adding that no surveillance cameras are installed to monitor the gold safe.
According to source, the safe contains around 900 Kilograms of 21 karat gold worth about 270 million EGP ($35.)
Police forces were able to find one of the bullions after investigations with one of the suspects, according to the source.
Following the incident, Minister of Finance Hani Kadry has paid a visit to the authority.
