(Mikael Thalen) The death of an off-duty officer in Abilene, Texas is being labeled a homicide, police confirmed during a press conference Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the body of Abilene Officer Don Allen was discovered inside his home by family members Monday in what investigators are describing as “clearly suspicious.”
Speaking with reporters, Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge released few details, only confirming the suspected cause of death.
“The circumstances behind his death indicate that the probable cause is homicide,” Chief Standridge said. “Aside from that, I’m not going to comment any further… I don’t want to say anything today that would compromise our ability to hold these people accountable.”
After being asked by reporters about a possible link to recent shooting deaths of other officers, Chief Standridge responded by stating that there was no “indication right now that random law enforcement personnel are being targeted.”
“The initial reaction was fear. Why was Officer Allen chosen? That speaks volumes as it relates to how vulnerable are we,” Chief Standridge added. “We look like we’re prepared for anything but the reality is, we’re just like you. We go to the same schools in this community. We attend the same churches. We eat at the same restaurants. We are just like you.”
The news of Officer Allen’s death follows the shooting death of an Illinois police officer today as well as theexecution-style shooting of a Harris Co., Texas, deputy sheriff late last week.
