Michigan National Guard Responds To “Government Shutdown Disaster Drill”

(Liz Gelardi)  Michigan National Guard members convoyed to Standish for a training session. The soldiers secured a former prison site as part of the exercise.

They responded to a made up scenario involving the a disaster that shutdown of government operations in Lansing. As part of the drill, the shuttered Standish prison site would become the new operations center for the governor, his staff and other state workers. First, the National Guard had to make sure the area was safe.

“It’s about as realistic as you can get today, so I think we’re pretty well prepared,” said Specialist Jacob Showerman.

Military units included the Quick Reaction Force. The team is made up of 125 soldiers and it’s designed to react to any emergency in the State of Michigan within an eight-hour window.

TV5 was the only local media outlet allowed inside the special training session.
