(David Ferguson) The accused gunman in the shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin has been asked not to return to Seminole State College, where he is currently enrolled, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel.
The Sentinel quotes college officials as saying, “Due to the highly charged and high-profile controversy involving this student, Seminole State has taken the unusual but necessary step this week to withdraw Mr. Zimmerman from enrollment. This decision is based solely on our responsibility to provide for the safety of our students on campus as well as for Mr. Zimmerman.
Zimmerman has attended classes sporadically at the college since he enrolled in 2003. At the time he was seeking a vocational certificate to work in the insurance industry. He re-enrolled in 2009 in a 4-year general studies degree program.
The 28-year-old shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on February 26, but was not arrested. Thousands of people rallied today to demand justice for the slain teenager.
Since the shooting, according to the Sentinel, Zimmerman has “gone into hiding.”
